Malden High School, Academic
Expectations
Malden High School students will:

A View into Malden High School
Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Malden High
School is a comprehensive high school offering core academic courses in Mathematics,
English Language Arts, the Social Sciences, and Science. We also offer Foreign
Language courses in Spanish, French, Italian, and Latin. Outside of the core
academic areas students can take courses in these program areas: Fine Arts,
Business, Technical Education (metals, automotive, woodworking and graphics),
Physical Education, and Health. Valued for the diversity among our students,
Malden High School boasts students from over 80 different countries speaking
more than 50 languages.
Malden High School has a rich and proud history of graduating outstanding students
who have gone on to become valuable members of this community and communities
around the world. Doctors, lawyers, educators, professional athletes, musicians,
artists, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and countless others have been
provided with a solid foundation while at Malden High School.
Malden High School continues to send our graduating seniors to some of the
finest universities and colleges in the world. At the present time Malden High
School graduates are enrolled at Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Colby, MIT, Boston
College, Boston University, Bowdoin, Stonehill, and UMass-Amherst to name a
few. We also send students to the many community colleges in the area, to the
armed services, and into the employment sector.
Malden High School provides all of its regular education and special education
students with academic support on many levels. MCAS remediation is provided
during the school day through Math and ELA tutorial classes. Students are referred
to these classes by their Guidance Counselors. After school, in the evening,
on weekends, and during the summer, MCAS enrichment classes are also offered.
Special Education students take advantage of academic tutorials, a transitional
program, an alternative high school, and specialized counseling. Our English
Language Learner population can take classes in ESL I through V. Additionally,
our staff has been trained to provide differentiated instruction to students
whose first language is not English. Speech therapy, occupational therapy, and
physical therapy are all services that can be provided to Malden High School
students.
Organization
Malden High School is organized as a House System. Each House has its own administrator
(House Principal), guidance counselor, and secretary. Each House is balanced
by race and by gender. House Principals and guidance counselors maintain their
relationship with students for 4 years and develop a close relationship with
the student and his/her family through phone calls, meetings, and frequent correspondence.
Guidance counselors provide Malden High School students with a blueprint for
success while at MHS and beyond. Students work with their House guidance counselor
to select an appropriate course of study, apply to colleges, seek assistance
with personal problems, or pursue internships or summer jobs.
